The
Tillett Gardens art gallery was one of the first professional
galleries in St. Thomas. Opening in 1959, the gallery at
first featured only the work of Jim Tillett, his maps, seascapes
and undersea fantasies which were typical of the Virgin Islands.
At that time, there were no other galleries in St. Thomas.
Artists showed their work in restaurants and hotel lobbies.
Today there are many galleries on the Islands and many art
shows throughout the year. Again Tillett Gardens was a first
with art shows where artists and musicians could network and
had a ready marketplace for their works. Today the art gallery
not only continues to feature the famous Tillett screen prints
but also features the best of the local artists in originals
and prints.
The Tillett tradition
of screen printing is being carried on by Tillett protégé Albert
(Sonny) Thomas.
Sonny started his apprenticeship with Tillett when he was still
in his teens and has learned the "tricks" of the
trade from the ground up. His mentor, Jim Tillett, recently
deceased, schooled Sonny in the famous Tillett techniques of
screen printing and mastering the Tillett family "box" method
of applying color to canvas and to coordinate with the unique
Tillett designs.
